Decarbonize CCNY – Sustainability and the City

Our 2025 Decarbonize CCNY Town Hall will take place on Thursday, October 9th, 2025 at 12:30PM in Shepard Hall Room 107. Join us for campus sustainability updates, voter registration, pizza, and the launch of the CCNY Chapter of TREEage!

Beginning with Professor Stephanie Rose’s capstone team project in 2022, a student-led decarbonization effort has gained momentum on campus. Here is a roundup of some progress to date, including the work of the Sustainability Students.

In Spring of 2023, Sustainability Student Yael Amron planned and convened Decarbonize CCNY call to action with support from Professor Stephanie Rose and her capstone teammates. Presentations included Professor Ahmed Mohamed’s plan for solar on the campus and some thoughts from the CCNY President, among others.

Beginning at 10 minutes, Professor Rose’s Capstone Team, Yael Amron, Alex Klein, Jerilys Perez, and Oscar Guatemala present on their yearlong efforts to further Campus Sustainability Planning and Decarbonization Efforts. Their final paper is available upon request.

In the Fall of 2023, the PSC-CCNY Environmental Justice working group convened a virtual event on campus decarbonization including a recap on the Capstone Team’s efforts from Yael Amron and the work of a new capstone team on the West Harlem Energy Proposal led by CUNY Building Performance Lab Director Michael Bobker.

In the Spring of 2024, the PSC-CUNY Environmental Justice Working group launched a plan to hold Decarbonization Town Halls on all CUNY Campuses. The first took place in May at Brooklyn College. With support from PSC-CUNY, Public Power NY, and NYPIRG, CCNY hosted a Town Hall on September 26th, 2024. Below is the video of that event.

In Fall of 2024, capstone team Dave Myers, Jason Ochs, and Marija Vasic (led by Professor Ahmed Mohamed, Electrical Engineering) presented their final ideas on a circular microgrid for the campus. Below is their presentation.
